Benefits

Leapfrog Geothermal provides geologists and reservoir engineers with the right tool for the job, increasing confidence and reducing risk.
Designed by the New Zealand geothermal community
Considerable geothermal research expertise exists in New Zealand. The different perspectives of industry, consultants and academia have produced an innovative solution well suited to the needs of the global geothermal market. Leapfrog Geothermal is designed and developed in collaboration with the New Zealand geothermal community with Contact Energy, GNS Science and the University of Auckland being key contributors. This collaboration continues and Leapfrog Geothermal is constantly evolving as it breaks new ground in understanding this challenging geology.
Transferring & utilising geological knowledge to reservoir models
With Leapfrog Geothermal geological knowledge is easily transferred from geological to reservoir models – both TOUGH2 and FEFLOW. The results of the reservoir simulations can then be visualised using Leapfrog Geothermal’s exceptional 3D graphics.
Visualise & understand
Stand back and see the big picture. Visualisation can aid in understanding the evolution of a geothermal field. Relationships such as heating, cooling and changes in chemistry can be visualised across a whole geothermal field, rather than solely at the localised areas around drilled wells. Easily and confidently share this information with others, for speedy communication and help in securing funding
Borehole planning
Optimise the depth, location, direction and drilling prognoses. Model and visualise in 3D for quick and clear comprehension. Then easily create reservoir models which are consistent with the geoscience model, ensuring conceptual inconsistencies are minimised. Forecast effects using the 3D capabilities of Leapfrog, for quick visualisation and interpretation.
Save time, reduce costs
Rapidly arrive at more robust models that dramatically accelerate projects, enable better borehole planning and reduce long term planning costs. With the flexibility to rapidly model and test alternative hypotheses, time can be spent on evaluation, not data processing and software manipulation. Dynamic modelling means the latest data can be easily incorporated, keeping models up-to-date and instep with the latest information.
Intuitive & organised
Leapfrog Geothermal guides you through the modelling process with easy to grasp, logical workflows that ensure models are developed consistently, increasing reliability and robustness. A central chronology table sets the geological sequence of model components. Complex faults and stratigraphy are all described chronologically. Additional workflows support the modelling of hydrothermal alteration, temperature, pressures and feed zones. Working with recognised terminology and workflows means you can focus on understanding the geothermal system, rather than deciphering complex software. This intuitive design and workspace also reduces training time, so users quickly become skilled and productive.
Audit & justify decisions
Leapfrog Geothermal’s modelling approach is flexible, but also self-documenting. Any user can go back and easily access model build detail. Models can therefore be easily reviewed and shared. Decisions become transparent and traceable, further reducing your organisation’s exposure to risk.
