The Long Valley Caldera, located in California, was formed about 760,000 years ago during the eruption of the Bishop Tuff which covered more than half of the USA. Since then multiple eruptions have filled the Caldera including the more recent (600 years ago) Mono-Inyo volcanic chain. The model presented here was built using only the geological map, cross sections and general knowledge of the geological history of the region. It shows several faulted units and the central resurgent dome as well as recent basaltic flows in the western part of the caldera. This model was inspired by the geology and structures of geothermal fields in Iceland. The geology of the area is composed of two main lithologies, the tuff units and the basaltic flows and intrusions. The tuff units form the highest elevation zones, extending throughout the area. They erupted during glacial periods and are interlayered with the basaltic lava flows erupted during interglacial periods from magmatic intrusions through the rift faults. This model was also converted into an unstructured (Voronoi) TOUGH2 grid for reservoir simulations and to forecast different production scenarios. This example shows a number of models built from data. The first is a magneto-telluric resistivity geophysical grid with modelled iso-surfaces; the second is downhole temperature data with modelled iso-surfaces using Leapfrog’s radial basis function based interpolation and the final example is downhole geological interval data with an example faulted geological model.
