Streamlining the geothermal workflows

Leapfrog Geothermal 3.7 is out now and builds on features released in 3.6 to improve flow simulation capabilities and 3D visualisation.

New functionality includes:

  • Evaluate a combined model onto a TOUGH2 flow model.
  • Geo-reference an imported TETRAD flow model.
  • Quickly visualise geophysics and other downhole numeric data in the 3D scene with Downhole Well Graphs.
  • Improve 3D visualisation with split scene and new colourmap options.
  • Manage models with full integration with Central model management.

EVALUATE A COMBINED MODEL ONTO A TOUGH2 FLOW MODEL

    • Create a TOUGH2 model with a combined model as the parent instead of a geological model.
    • Use the combined model to evaluate rock types onto the TOUGH2 flow model, with either a structured or unstructured grid. A typical use case is a combined model created from a geological model and one or more numeric models.
    • For a TOUGH2 model with an unstructured grid, the faults and wells gridding features are those associated with the geological model in the combined model.
    • Although there can only be one geological model in the combined model, there can be multiple numeric models, for example porosity, permeability and temperature.

GEO-REFERENCE AN IMPORTED TETRAD FLOW MODEL

  • Support for the import and visualisation of TETRAD IS and GV files was added in Leapfrog Geothermal 3.6. Now in 3.7:

    • The TETRAD model can be geo-referenced or translated and rotated to its correct position and orientation in the global coordinate system.
    • The y-axis can also be flipped, which is useful if the grid x, y axis orientation is different from the global x, y orientation.

DOWNHOLE WELL GRAPHS

    • Geophysics or other downhole numeric data, including interval, point and LAS data, can now be displayed in the 3D scene to quickly visualise your well data in 3D as a trace line or bar graph.
    • Interval numeric data is displayed as a bar graph, either with a single flat colour or using a colourmap. Minimum and maximum clamping values can be set, with the option to log transform the data. Scaling and offset slider bar controls improve viewing in the scene.
    • The single well graph can be rendered either to the left or right hand side of the well trace.

Improved 3D visualisation

  • SPLIT SCENE VIEW

    Visualise your 3D data from 1, 2 or 3 viewpoints and provide context and clarity when viewing a scene (especially useful when exploring your model close up).

    • Undock the slave scene to run it on a second monitor and control object visibility, scene slicing, zoom level and image rendering for even richer engagement.

    COLOURMAP IMPROVEMENTS

    • New colour gradient options replace the existing colour maps for better display of heatmaps, elevation, azimuth and geophysics data as well as diverging data and grayscales. Existing colour maps may still be used if preferred.
    • Discrete Colourmaps can now be easily created using various statistical methods for use with numerical interpolants.

CENTRAL model management support

  • Central now integrates with Geothermal 3.7 and improves model management capabilities with:

    • Publishing 2D Grids - Grids stored in both the GIS Data, Maps and Images folder and the Geophysical Data folder can now be published to Central. In the Browser, the grid will appear in the GIS Data and Images folder.
    • Fence and Serial Sections - can now be published to Central and viewed in the Central Browser.
    • Users can now define the location of the temporary publishing cache.
    • User interface improvements – A green bar monitors download progress of objects and sub objects such as textures.

FEATURES RELEASED IN LEAPFROG GEOTHERMAL 3.6

TOUGH2 UNSTRUCTURED GRID SUPPORT

  • It is now possible to create a TOUGH2 flow model with an unstructured grid geometry with well locations, faults and other objects as control features. The grid is an unstructured Voronoi grid in X, Y and layered in Z.

IMPORT AND VISUALISE TETRAD FLOW MODELS

  • TETRAD flow simulation model IS and GV files can now be imported into Leapfrog Geothermal. For time-dependent simulation output attributes, a timestep slider is available to view the different timesteps available. The TETRAD grid can also be sliced or subsetted in I, J and K index directions.

IMPROVED VISUALISATION OF MAGNETO-TELLURIC GEOPHYSICAL GRIDS

  • The visualisation of magneto-telluric (MT) geophysical grids has been improved with:

    • Better performance
    • Proper transparency support
    • Slice in I, J and/or K
    • Subset in I, J and/or K

VARY WELL CYLINDER RADIUS BY NUMERIC VALUE

  • Numeric interval columns in well data can be displayed as lines or cylinders. There is a new option for displaying cylinders, whereby the radius of the cylinders can be set from a numeric interval data column in the table.

IMPROVEMENTS TO GRAPHS AND STATISTICS

  • A number of changes have been made to how graphs and statistics are displayed. The user interface is more consistent and the older Properties dialog histogram has been replaced with a more useful Table of Statistics.

    The controls for selecting points on a scatter plot now include a lasso tool for freeform drawing on the graph.

VIEW INTEGRATION WITH LEAPFROG GEOTHERMAL

  • It has never been so quick and easy to consult a colleague on a tricky model, share impactful visual information with stakeholders or update key personnel on a developing situation. View, Seequent’s web-based solution for visualising on a purpose-built scene, is fully integrated into Geothermal 3.6.

MODEL MANAGEMENT

  • Leapfrog Geothermal 3.6 further develops operability with model management platform, Central, which allows geothermal projects to be stored and managed from a single source of truth. Of particular value to the well-regulated industry, audit trails are easily maintained, security is heightened and version control issues are avoided. The platform also facilitates and improves team collaboration and decision making, especially around key challenges like making decisions while drilling.
